My Principles Applied to the Johnstown Flood of 1889
The Johnstown Flood was strictly The South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club's fault. I believe that the overarching authority on things should keep a firm hold on what they control. In this case, this club was the absolute sovereign of the dam, responsible for modifying the dam and maintaining it. Not only did they fail as to properly take care of the dam, but they also failed to try and patch the matter up with those affected. Rebellion and anger will spark soon after serious issues like this if no heart-felt statements are made from the body responsible for the tragedy. People, rightly so, placed their blame on this club, and this club did not take full initiative for this. This club gave the people reason to rebel because they did not want to admit their wrongdoings. 2209 was the total death toll, so families and friends were outraged and wanted closure. They took this matter to court. I think it is absolutely preposterous that an authority so high would give its citizens a reason to challenge them. People are born selfish, and they do things that will benefit themselves. After the flood, people saw the opportunity immediately to benefit themselves with money from suing and hurt the organization they were mad at. Now, if the club did not give the selfish people a reason to be mad in the first place, the people would feel no reason to rise up against the authority. The US government then got involved and placed a law change adopting a British legislation that held non-negligent defendants capable of being guilty for damage caused from incorrect land uses. I agree with the government doing this because it suppressed anger towards the government and legal issues that had to be addressed. People started to calm down when they felt tended to and cared for. Again, people only stop rebelling when things go their way. The fault of the dam's owner or organizations that should have been looking after it thoroughly caused mass-destruction and lives lost. It's a shame that the dam's owner caused so much trouble.
P.S. I did not have wifi to complete this assignment yesterday (@ the gparents)
